The Bicycle Opera Project

Bringing Canadian contemporary opera to communities by bicycle

“ There’s a new kind of opera riding into town.” —The Toronto Star

The Bicycle Opera Project is the only Canadian opera company that tours by bicycle. Designed to bring contemporary Canadian music to smaller communities where there is little opportunity to hear it, our company closes the gap between audiences and singers by performing in intimate spaces. We perform new Canadian works that focus on current issues. Our productions are sung in English, ensuring that audiences can relate to the material.

“The productions are stripped down for the sake of mobility, which leads to lean and accessible presentations.” —The Globe and Mail

“…many people in their audience are first-time operagoers, who delight in the company’s unconventional approach.” —CBC The National News – Arts & Entertainment

Our company works with emerging and established composers to bring timely Canadian works to the stage. We work directly with composers to rearrange works for a small, portable instrumental ensemble that can be toured on bicycle, creating a car-free alternative to touring.
